Palisade State Park – The Unknown Paradise

I have been camping hundreds of times, most of the time consisting of rolling out the green canvas springbar tent, blowing up the air mattress or extra sleeping bags and hope the elements don’t reign down fury upon us. We decide that we wanted to try something new, something we haven’t done before. Sleep in comfort and style while we camp.

We picked up our rental from Nielson RV. We took the 32′ Coachman Leprechaun, which sleeps 8. A big queen size bed, bunks beds, a huge overhead area for sleeping, and did I mention a nice bathroom with a shower!

We traveled up to Palisade State Park, which is located in central Utah. As you travel North on Highway 89, you pass Gunnison, headed towards Manti. Turn off jump past a small town called Sterling and head 2 miles east up the canyon. The road is paved the whole way.

I used to come camping up here as a kid and I remember spending hours in the lake trying to catch minnows and frogs. I had some of the worst sunburns of my life, but also some of the fondest memories.

This time I had my wife and 4 kids. This was going to be our summer camping trip and we were going to enjoy it in style.

As we rolled into the State Park, there were a lot more campgrounds than I remembered. We came to our camping spot and parked, we put the slide-out out on the motor home and we were done. Easiest setting up of camp I have ever had.

There are a lot of activities that can be done at Palisades.

  1. Swimming
  2. Fishing
  3. Paddle boating
  4. Canoeing
  5. Hiking
  6. 4 wheeler riding
  7. Golfing (There is a 18 hole Golf Course)
  8. Beach
  9. Playground
  10. Restaurant and Store
  11. List goes on and on.

Most of our time was spent down in the water, reminiscent of my childhood. Chasing minnows and frogs and just enjoying the cold water. Evenings we would start up the grill and cook hotdogs, hamburgers and chicken. We spent time away from technology, although the motor home does have 2 tv’s which we would turn on the catch the score of the basketball game and let the kids watch a movie as we were getting ready for bed. It was a time to relax, unwind and enjoy being with family and friends.

We were there for 3 days, I wished it had been more. I also realized taking a shower while camping was nice. A luxury I really hadn’t had before. Palisade offered full hookups at a very reasonable price. If you get a chance I would highly recommend camping there.

I get asked if its difficult to drive a motor home. The one we took was the longest motor home (32′) that Nielson RV offers for rentals. You just need to watch out when you turn, other than that its just like driving a car. It provides plenty of power to get up hills and you can drive 75 miles per hour down the freeway with no problem. Although if you are expecting to get gas mileage, not going to happen. We got average of 8-10 miles to the gallon.

If your looking for a fun place to take your family that offer a lot of activities, but still maintains elements of roughing it, or elements of luxury. This is a great place. Camping fees are low and offers a ton of things to do. Check out their website at https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/palisade/.
